The overview
As a stage director, I conceptualized and executed an Ao Dai fashion show to commemorate 80 years of the August Revolution and 50 years of Vietnam's reunification. Leading 20+ performers, I directed the creative vision and produced a soundtrack blending traditional folk songs with modern arrangements. The production traced Vietnam's cultural evolution from "Traditional" (classic designs and folk songs that unified communities during wartime) to "Modern" (contemporary ao dai symbolizing post-war renewal and global integration).
The development
Concept & Cultural Narrative: Developed a two-phase structure, namely traditional/wartime transitioning to modern/peace phase, to depict Vietnam’s cultural evolution. Conducted historical research and musical contexts to authentically portray how folk songs connected communities during war and how cultural identity transformed after reunification.
Music Production & Storytelling: Co-produced the complete soundtrack, selecting traditional folk songs and creating modern arrangements that blended cultural roots with contemporary sounds. Wrote narration connecting music to Vietnam's journey of resilience and renewal.
Choreography & Visual Direction: Designed the performance flow to parallel the narrative arc, from traditional to modernized ao dai. Coordinated walk sequences and timing for each performer pair, suggesting movements and poses that visually reflected the story’s emotional progression.
Production Management: Oversaw technical operations, including lighting transitions, sound engineering, and show timing, ensuring every visual and auditory element aligned seamlessly with the soundtrack.
the takeaways
Delivered a sold-out production to 200+ attendees, and was recognized as the most culturally significant show in three years. The performance deepened cross-cultural understanding of Vietnamese heritage and created meaningful cultural exchange within the Denison University community.
